Though I'm only a recent convert to the band, in a way, it is disturbing to see an album review on the home page of the New York Times for every other schlub to read. They're a synth driven trio from London (points to you, UK) with only a couple of demo tracks available to date. I have posted mp3 files for your listening pleasure, and hope you enjoy them as much as I have. I like their simple sound, the few elements standing strongly on their own, deeply effecting with a certain urgency and truthfulness. The dance beats are great, too, and I hope they make the summer indie dance playlist. I'm definitely keeping an ear out for them in the coming months. Oh, and they're playing at LE KLUB in Paris in December.

Sports Post Number Two

Objective: diversify my blogs content, provide a partial explanation of how i've been spending my time this summer, post this cool picture of me

At some point this past semester I decided I wanted to try triathlon, meaning race one this coming summer. Ever since I injured my IT band at the end of high school, preventing me from running in college, I have swam and cycled to stay fit and have fun. Running has remained my best strength, but I have greatly improved in the other sports, and have come to love each one. After a long time spent swimming while my tendons healed, I came back to running with a very different approach and mentality, and have had no major issues with my legs save for a brief injury last summer sustained from too much hiking.

Triathlon seemed like the perfect compromise for me and my athletic aspirations, and after making friends with a triathlete this summer, I signed up for my first olympic or international distance triathlon about a month ago on July 12. I spent the two months prior training almost every day, which I enjoyed better than any other type of training I had done. It kept me very healthy, clean and sober, and was really the only way I survived working two shitty jobs. SO, I raced, meeting and surpassing the time goals I had set for myself, even beating my triathlete friend (with three seasons of experience and a really sweet tri bike). I wore a uni race suit and laced my running kicks with bungee cord. I finished third in my age category, 19 and under.

I'm very glad to have found triathlon, and will continue to train and race as my schedule permits. My goals are as follows:
Paris Marathon April 2009
Half Ironman Triathlon Summer 2009
Ironman Triathlon Summer 2010. Probably not Kona.

Perhaps. After one final exam tomorrow (easy), I will be more free from schoolwork than usual, free to blog, be trendy, suck on caffeinated beverages, and discuss unimportant topics with false friends. It's been pretty busy, and I'm stressing about the future. I think the cigarette butt disposal unit has caught fire, from the inside. It's spewing smoke.

This weekend I went rock climbing in West Virginia at New River Gorge National Park with the Kenyon outdoors club. Seeing as my camera is broken from the last outdoors club trip I participated in, I have no pictures to post (boohoo). I believe a few were taken, and so I will post them if they turn up.

It was like this, but it was a guy, there was no helmet, and it was me.

I'm so silly. Why blog when there are papers to be written? I've got six pages of historical criticism to write for tomorrow. I don't doubt that it will be fun, really, I do like Germany. This is a Max Beckmann sketch from the 1910's

I haven't picked a topic yet, though I know I want to examine the social structures during the First World War that caused the Empire to fall so violently. These social frames I am to choose from include gender and the role of women, disparity between the classes, and the failed economy. There are actually many more topics to choose from, I might write about hunger in Berlin, which would connect all three. My original intent was to write about 'Germanness', which is actually an unique cultural identity. It'll get done.

The kids across from me just popped adderall. Tonight Olin is worse than Gund.

Sorr the blog has been sluggish, school has been alot as usual. But what's worth reporting? Not very much. However, I can promise you some good blogging in two weeks upon my return from Utah, where as of Sunday I will be with the Kenyon Coll Outdoors Club. We'll be tripping around Zion national park for a week, 'humping' packs (anyone read "The Things They Carried"?). I don't really know what to expect, as this will be my first camping experience out West. I really do fear the grizzlies.

Worth mentioning (ooh, something, really?) is my eyesight just now. I've got this Mac computer I've been using for the past hour or so as students often do, and 5 minutes ago I suffered this awful and confusing sensation staring into the screen. I had been writing and reviewing emails on a white background, and then I switched gears and started leafing through blogs (--respect--) on a black background. In an instant, the colors on the black page brightened, and I wanted to look away. The black spaces seemed to be moving away from me, and in them stars began to spin. I was sitting in a chair the whole time. At this point, I just let me head roll back and submitted to the experience. Now I'm tired, and I didn' -- ----- - -- - -- - - - <---- << ----

Many of you know this house. It is very disgusting. Skinny Middle Ground Pirate and ACG hosted the afterparty to the Sex Workers Artshow last night for the second year in a row. Last year my luck wasn't so good, and I had to stay home and do homework. This year, I went, mostly out of determination: this was an event I did not want to miss. Too bad I missed the sex workers, who had departed before I arrived.

Last night was Philander's Phling, Kenyon's annual semi formal tribute to the man Philander Chase. Got really drunk, but not too drunk, with some friends in ma new room. It was a really pleasant affair, lots of liquor, conversation, and friends. That last sentence qualifies this post as a shitty sentimental one, does it not? We drank Laird's Applejack Brandy, a delightful liquor new to me old to the country, the Founding Father's booze of choice. Examples include George Washington, who introduced the stuff to the Virginia Colony, Abraham Lincoln, and later Linden B Johnson. Robert Laird himself fought in the Revolutionary War and supplied the troops with spirits. This post is boring me. Pics from the party should make their way to facebook soon. I would have photographed, only my camera was out of batteries.

Found this on a blog I dig, which brought it up as some kind of tribute to the Fonz, proving that he had contact with other famous people. The Fonz is cool, and complementing, but David Bowie is, as can be assumed, better. He touches on the idea of the difference between 'loving someone' and 'being in love with someone', and makes a good point. Enjoy.

Last night I snagged a few beers from the crozier porch, which shouldn't be considered stealing if they were outside unguarded, drank them reading this okay book, then hung with Jim, Abby, and Joey. Today I had no class, so I took advantage of it by doing nothing. Then we lounged in the kitchen for a while, Jim, Bakary, and I, viewing pictures of P.F. Kluge on facebook. Back in the saddle (mather) again

Friends, I am back in Mather! Esei and I began to leave Manning yesterday morning around 8:30am, taking with us our belongings, leaving behind crappy hallmates and a lot of filth. Esei was real slow, but thanks to Megan, he didn't lag behind. The combination of packing, heavy lifting, and breathing in all those excited dust particles left me exhausted. Mike Shea and Michael Rabenberg helped us out a whole lot. Finally, we rested and were pleased with our work at the late hour of 4 oclock, totally moved in, filthy, and ready for naps. I tidied a bit more, showered, met a few of our new hallmates, then took a long nap. After I was ready to meet more mather kids, who I watched a movie with, called, 'Waking Life'. It was a tough film to watch, requiring all my attention and focus. The fact that I had had a few glasses of wine didn't help. Then the New Apartments were visited, some fun was had, and then it was back to bed at 4am. I'm glad to be here.
